Background

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of German broadcasting in the fall of 1923, the Technoseum Mannheim is presenting an extensive special exhibition on the history of radio and television. In addition to tracing the development of technology and programming and the political role of broadcasting over the past 100 years, the exhibition is devoted in particular to the cultural and socio-historical dimensions of broadcasting history.
The exhibition’s scenographic centerpiece is a frequency band that acts as a physical thread guiding visitors along a vividly illustrated chronological scale through hundred years of radio and television history, literally “broadcasting” it.
It thus functions as an aesthetic narrative and organizing principle at the same time. Along both sides of the frequency band, the history of technology and historic perspectives of the broadcasting audience are staged in a vivid and informative manner. These narratives are divided into five time periods and staged like cabinets according to the epochs.

Acoustically, they are accompanied by a sample of the respective contemporary historical broadcasting highlights. The exhibition design allows visitors to discover the various stages of media history and its social impact in an interactive and audio-visual manner.
Furthermore the design is aiming to be sustainable:
Many exhibition elements, such as showcases, and lighting elements were reused and rearranged, but still conform to a style guide conceived for the exhibition, to which all graphic, cinematic, and digital mediation formats are also subject.

Background

The Gösgen nuclear power plant went into service in 1981 and is scheduled to be decommissioned in the next five years. After the decommissioning the plant will be dismantled over a period of twenty years. A visitor centre on site explains to visitors (school classes, residents, tourists) how a nuclear power plant works, how the atomic phase-out is planned to proceed and allows a glimpse into the future of energy management without nuclear power. Presenting interviews with plant employees, functional models of nuclear fission, models of fuel rods, a collection of minerals, and historical films, the exhibition show the visitors how a nuclear power plant works. At the end of the tour, the visitors have the opportunity to playfully test their knowledge about their own energy needs and to let cars and trains race against each other in a digital future landscape by pedaling on a bicycle ergometer.

Up to Space

Background

»Hurrah ! Hurrah!« exclaimed Michel Ardan and Nicholl in one voice. Indeed, this thick darkness proved that the projectile had left the earth, for the soil, brilliantly lit by the moonbeams, would have been visible to the travellers, if they had been lying on its surface. This darkness also showed that the projectile had passed the atmospheric strata, for the diffused light spread in the air would have been reflected on the metal walls, which reflection was wanting. This light would have lit the window, and the window was dark. Doubt was no longer possible; the travellers had left the earth. (Jules Verne, Around the Moon, 1869)

The special exhibition „Up to Space“ at the Universum® Bremen presents the future and present state of astronautical space travel. Virtual journeys into space and to the moon, everyday-life at the International Space Station (ISS), real moon dust, and the sensation of zero gravity can be experienced during a visit to the exhibition. Interactive exhibits facilitate the learning experience. The aesthetic materials, coloured lights, and real space technology create an atmosphere, in which the boundaries between exhibition and its visitors vanish. They are being sent on a journey to space and back. From Bremen, the exhibition will travel to the Musée de l’Air et de l’Espace in Paris.

Background

The University of Hamburg is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2019. Honouring this anniversary, a 300 square metre permanent exhibition about the scientific institution’s eventful past was put on display at the university museum’s main building. The exhibition approaches the past and present of the university in two different ways: on the one hand through a timeline with many previously unpublished photographs of everyday university life. In addition to this, numerous thematic displays present the topic from a different angle. Exhibits from the university’s different departments bear witness to the many different aspects of university life. An interactive column in front of the main hall welcomes the visitors with a sound collage assembled from 100 years of the university’s history. The exhibition itself also is interactive: the visitors can influence exhibits, people, and sounds from the university presented to them via sensors. A media guide supplements the exhibits and exhibition texts, offering a digital tour and a plethora of background material. gewerkdesign won the design competition for design and the mounting of the exhibition as well as the design of the exhibition catalogue.

Out of Office – When robots and AI do our work for us …

What differences are there (still) between humans and machines?

Background

The special exhibition discusses the future changes in our working habits, brought about by the increasing competition humans encounter from artificial intelligence. Will we find new modes of cooperation, enabling us to work more freely, or will human employees be made more and more redundant? The joint exhibition project by the Bucerius Lab of the ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin and the Museum der Arbeit discusses in eleven chapters the fundamental changes AI and robots have already brought about in our working environment and which developments might be in store for us. The exhibition weighs chances and risks of these developments and encourages reflection about our position in the future working world. The exhibition’s scenography elaborates on the connection between humans and machines, drawing a line from the past to the present, and spying into the future. The exhibition commences in the lobby – furnished with paintings showing a romanticised idea of work, and doused in a warm and dim light. In the exhibition hall, a former industrial site, a sharp contrast follows: here the visitors find themselves entangled in a »neural network«, resembling the human brain and its organic connections, nerve cords, and synapses, but resembling also the core of an artificial intelligence – straight, cool, technical, and fast. Cords span the whole room, lead to the different narrative chapters, and create connections. Everything is connected to everything in this simplistic, concentrated, and dynamic design. The last exhibition chapter is an interactive and participatory »Forum« – a place for entering the discussion about one’s experiences and one’s own point of view.

Sugars and Beyond! Food – Matter – Energy

Background

In 2015 the display collection of the former research and training centre of the sugar industry – Berlin Wedding’s Sugar Museum – was incorporated into the German Museum of Technology’s permanent exhibition. When designing the new exhibition site, gewerkdesign chose to include a few memories and references to the former sugar museum; for example, the specimens of beetles harmful to the sugar beet that have been preserved in fluid or the former sugar institute’s research material on sugar cane.

The second part of the new exhibition is dedicated to sugar compounds used for purposes other than sweetening food; for instance, as building matter, for energy storage or for coding and transmitting information. The room is surrounded by a large wall containing texts, lighting and life-sized illustrations of people who have a very special relationship with sugar.

Science + Fiction – Between Nanoworld and Global Culture

Background

The international travelling exhibition »science + fiction« contemplates the cultural relations between fine arts and science. Within a structure designed exclusively for the exhibition by gewerkdesing works of art and scientific facts are juxtaposed.

Just like a »Wunderkammer« from the Renaissance when the arts and sciences were not as separate as they are today, the exhibition uses artistic works in order to comment upon the essential accomplishments of science represented by images, objects, specimens and media reports.

Working together with scientists and artists gewerkdesign specified an architectural matrix consisting of identical modules for integrating the exhibits.
