Background
Starting 2015, Eutin Castle’s museum has undertaken a gradual and extensive remodelling of its appearance – designed and consulted by gewerkdesign. The process was divided into several parts: in April 2017 the remodelling of the castle’s chapel was finished, the newly designed royal seating platform in the chapel, and the adjoining chamber presenting the antependium – a luxurious textile decoration in front of the altar. The redesign of the antependium chamber is focused on the exhibit itself. An intricate lighting concept guides the visitors’ eyes through the dimly lit room’s simple furnishings – with the antependium as the room’s centre and focus.
The next part of the remodelling – a modern signage system and the first part of the new permanent exhibition – was presented to the public in June 2018. The design drew inspiration from the reflections and crystalline shapes of the castle’s luxurious chandeliers. Taking this idea as a starting point, gewerkdesign designed a variety of graphic elements that would guide the visitors from the inner courtyard into the castle’s piano nobile. Cooperating with the lighting designer Ulrike Link, the rooms were furnished with pillars matching the room’s colours. These polygonal pillars are covered with fabric and carry information about the rooms’ history as well as lamps and spotlights. Crystalline shapes are an important element of the design and also characterise the castle’s remodelled logotype. Welcoming the »digital natives«, the artist Larissa Blau created an animated film repeating reflection as a design element and imitating the style of a kaleidoscope. The media guide was designed in cooperation with Graphscape and speak low, providing additional videos, audios, and texts with in-depth information throughout a round tour through the castle.
